Types of blogs that make money ( Top 18 Types )

There are a lot of different types of blogs which you can make and all of them can make a nice amount of profit. Every blog is different and how much you can earn from your blog will mostly be determined by how much traffic you have. The competition also plays a big role in how much you can earn, and some types of blogs are in extremely competitive niches like health, fitness, and finance.

The good news is that even if you have a type of blog which is targeting a competitive niche is that you can earn a lot more money with less traffic. Although that being said getting organic traffic in competitive niches will take a while. If you are wondering what type of blog you should make then you should stick to something that you know. If you have experience with fitness than make a fitness blog if you are a single parent than you can make a blog about that.

Honestly speaking the type of a blog doesn’t really matter, as long as you have some traffic you will be able to monetize it. It is rather pointless on focusing on just one type of blog which has huge earning potential but the competition is so fierce that you will have a hard time ranking. Some blogs are better than others, even the ones which are targeting the same niche, that doesn’t guarantee that you will make the same amount of money as your competition does.

What your ultimate goal is with the blog should determine what type of blog you make, if you want to make passive income than you have to make a type of blog which is evergreen. On the other hand, if you want to build a community around your blog than you should make a lifestyle blog. Parenting blog

Parenting blogs can be extremely profitable, and if you are a stay at home mom then you already have all the info which you need to start writing some high-quality content. The downside of parenting blogs is that they can be fairly competitive, there are a lot of these types of blogs being made every single day. Although if you need a steady income in the next couple of months then you should know that it will take you around a year of work before your blog starts earning any significant money.

Most people who make parenting blogs tend to have some generic blog, I am not talking about the look of the blog but how the content is written. The parenting niche is extremely big, and there are other subcategories that you should target as these are less competitive which means that you will start earning money a lot faster. If you want to make a parenting blog then you should niche down and target different aspects of parenting, like how to raise a special needs child, how to take care of twins, and so on. No matter what type of blog you make you will still be in the google sandbox for the first couple of months, for more information check out my recent article How to get out of Google sandbox? ( In 8 Steps ).

Lifestyle blog

Lifestyle blogs have gained a lot of popularity over the past decade, although they tend to be extremely profitable they are fairly risky blogs to make. The main difference between a lifestyle blog and a normal blog is that the lifestyle blog is based on the blogger’s personality. The users will come to the blogger’s blog not to get information but to find out what the blogger recommends and what is his or her opinion.

In the long run, this is extremely profitable, especially if you give valuable advice and promote high-quality products. The problem with lifestyle blogs is that they are not passive, you will have to constantly write new content and promote your blog on social media. The good news is that if you promote your lifestyle blog on social media than you will start earning a lot faster, and you will also be able to monetize your social media accounts as well. If you have already made your blog and you are wondering when to publish it then check out my recent article When should I publish my Website? ( Top 9 Step Checklist ).

Hobby blog

Hobby blogs are my favorite type of blogs, there are a lot of different types of hobbies which people are enjoying and there are new hobbies popping up every year. Only a decade ago there was no such thing as flying a drone as a hobby, but today it is a billion-dollar industry. The best part about hobby blogs is that people will often spend money on their hobby, I mean just look at car enthusiasts they spend a lot of money to modify their cars.

If you want to make a hobby blog then you have to think of two things, what is the trend of the hobby and how long will it be relevant. Some hobbies are evergreen like archery, fishing and so on, while other hobbies which rely on a certain technological device tend to fade out in a couple of years.

DIY blog

The DIY niche is one of the most interesting niches, you will find blogs targeting simple DIY task to blogs which are targeting extremely complicated DIY categories. The money which can be made form a DIY blog depends on the specific niche which you target, but this type of blog is excellent for direct sales. With direct sales of different products, you can keep most of the money although you will have to work a little bit extra for it.

On the other hand, you do not even need a physical product, instead you can sell an E-book. If you know how to plan stuff out and also how to save money on different DIY projects then this is extremely valuable, bundle all that information up, and sell it to your users. Some DIY blogs tend to be also personality-based blogs, and oftentimes people tend to revisit the same blog because they like the author.

One drawback with DIY blogs is that you need to record videos, on the other hand if you upload these videos to YouTube as well then you will have two income sources, one from YouTube and one from your DIY blog.

Health blog

Health blogs are extremely profitable but they are one of the most competitive types of blogs that you can make. Generally speaking, health blogs have one of the highest-earning potentials, and this is why a lot of people are creating these types of blogs. If you are new to blogging then you have to stay far away from a health-related niche if you do not have any credentials. Google has made a couple of updates in the past targeting the health niche and unless you are an actual doctor you will not be able to rank on google.

The home remedies and the homeopathic remedies are also in this category, google has been slapping these niches left and right. The main reason why Google doesn’t like these types of blogs is that far too many of them prey on desperate people offering them fake remedies for virtually anything.

Fitness blog

Fitness blogs tend to be personality or even lifestyle based blogs, and they can be extremely profitable. The fitness industry is massive, you can sell workout plans, protein shakes, supplements, fitness gear, and so on. The problem with fitness blogs is that they tend to be fairly competitive, and you will have to focus on both your blog and social media as well. Fitness blogs can be passive, but if you want to maximize your earnings then you will have to dedicate yourself to it fully.

It is extremely important to make a blog in a niche where you either have some knowledge or you are passionate about. If your thing is fitness then go ahead and make a fitness blog, but if you just want to chase the money with a fitness blog than it will be an uphill battle.

Outdoors blog

As most people are stuck behind their desks for the wast majority of the day some of them relax by reading or watching about the outdoors. Nature is a big draw for a lot of people, not only for the ones that want to visit but also to people who just want to have a relaxing experience. Gear for outdoors tends to be all over the place, and you can find something for every kind of budget. There are certain skills that go hand in hand with the outdoors, like survival skills, building shelter, hunting, and so on.

Generally speaking most blogs focusing on the outdoors tend to be personality-driven, although you can get away with a generic outdoors blog. Outdoor blogs that are personality-driven are not passive at all, so you will have to constantly update your blog with new content. On the other hand, if you make a generic outdoors blog focusing on different aspects of the outdoors than the blog has the potential to become passive in the long run.

Frugal living blog

There are a lot of people who instead of buying a $700 Gucci belt they would rather invest it in living as frugally as possible. Since the past decade, these frugal living blogs have become extremely popular, and there is a big demand for them. The only problem with frugal living blogs is that the income potential is fairly low when compared to the other types of blogs listed here. Although with that being said if you manage to get a lot of traffic than your earnings will be a lot higher.

The best part about frugal living is that the competition is fairly low and with some out of the box thinking you can make it work. Let’s say that you live in New York than you would make a blog about frugal living in New York. This city is one of the highest costs of living in the country and a lot of people are interested in how they can live as frugally as possible.

Homesteading blog

In the past decade homesteading blogs have become extremely popular, the earning potential is not that high and the competition also tends to be fairly high. With that being said there are certain sub-niches which you can target which are also low competition like growing tomatoes in pots, or how to grow your own food. Generally speaking, most people who have a homesteading blog tend to live on an actual homestead, although not all of them.

As more and more people are looking to grow their own food, this will be even bigger and more popular. A homesteading blog can contain anything from DIY skills to how-to articles, although the how-to articles will pull in a lot of traffic, but generally speaking, these kinds of articles are fairly low earners.

Pets blog

The pet-related industry is massive, a lot of people consider their pets to be their children, and they will spend a lot of money on keeping their pets healthy and happy. Generally speaking, pet-related items are fairly cheap but small commissions can add up with a lot of traffic. Usually, people who have pet blogs tend to earn with Amazon affiliate, which pays a small commotion when someone purchases something with their affiliate link.

The pet niche teds to be fairly competitive but there are plenty of sub-niches that you can target like cats, dogs, fish, birds, and so on. Some bloggers target one specific breed of pet like Yorkshire terrier dogs, although these niched down blogs tend to get less traffic but they tend to rank fairly fast which means that you will start earning a lot faster.

Finance blog

Financial blogs tend to be the most competitive types of blogs, even their sub-niches are extremely competitive. Finance blogs that are fairly old tend to do extremely good when it comes to traffic and earnings. If you are a complete beginner and you do not know a lot about finances than you should stay away from this type of blog. On the other hand, if you have experience in the finance niche than you should go ahead and make a blog.

The biggest problem with finance blogs is that due to the competition the traffic will take its time to come, it could take years to rank on google for a couple of search terms. On the other hand, if you manage to get some traffic to your blog with social media or organically from google then your earning potential will be massive.

Food blog

Food blogs are a good type of blog to make but only if you have the passion for food in general. Usually, food blogs tend to embed their videos from YouTube as it is extremely hard to rank a recipe blog. If you are planning to make a recipe blog than you have to think outside of the box, most recipe blogs are as generic as possible and the vast majority of them have the same recipes as every other recipe blog.

With a food blog you have to do something to stand out from the crowd, and trust me the crowd is massive. When it comes to the earning potential of food blogs they are somewhere in the middle, some get sponsored deals while others rely on affiliate commissions by selling cooking-related utensils and devices.

Travel blog

There is big money to be made in the travel industry, in fact, almost all blogs ranking for the travel niche are affiliate websites. The best part about travel blogs is that the commissions tend to be fairly high when you compare them to other types of blogs. On the other hand, travel blogs are seasonal blogs, for the most part, the vast majority of earnings and traffic will be during the summer months and there is a noticeable downtrend during the wintertime.

Mommy blogs

Do not confuse it with the parenting niche, as this is about parenting and mommy blogs are mostly about how to manage as either stay at home mom or a single parent. Oftentimes mommy blogs will teach others how to earn online, although not all of them offer real advice. Generally speaking, people who have mommy blogs tend to promote their blogs on social media, and this is from the wast majority of their traffic is coming from.

Blogging blog

This is what I have here, a blog about blogging. There are a lot of aspects which you can target in this niche, although if you are new then you should probably stay away from it as the competition is massive. Generally speaking, most bloggers who have a blog about blogging tend to be old-time bloggers, for example, I have been blogging since 2007 and through the years I have gained a lot of experience.

Making money online blog

The making money online niche is massive and there is a lot of money to be made, as long as you know what you are doing. The problem is that there are way too many scams in this niche and google doesn’t really trust these types of blogs. On the other hand, if you offer genuine advice and don’t promote some kind of scam then you will most likely be successful. Just keep in mind that the making money online niche is extremely saturated and highly competitive.

Green living blog

A lot of people want to lower their carbon footprint, there is already a lot of information online about this but this is a fairly new trend and there is a lot of potentially low competition sub-niches to target. In addition to this, there are a lot of blogs that focus on only one aspect like solar panels, these convert fairly well, and as the technology is getting cheaper more and more people are starting to use them.

Dating advice blog

Dating is big business, especially if you manage to rank for a keyword like “how to get your ex back”. This kind of blogs can make some serious amount of money, although it takes some time to rank in this niche as it is highly competitive. Generally speaking, people who have blogs about dating tend to monetize it with their own info product or they have an online course. Although there are some who are promoting affiliate programs related to dating.

In conclusion

As you can see there are a lot of types of blogs, and all of them have the potential of making money. The most important factor which determines how much money a blog makes is the amount of traffic that the blog gets. The good news is that there are some blog types listed above that do not need a lot of traffic in order for you to make a full-time income from them.
